6 important points one must know about self discipline are-
- Make it a habit.
- The earlier the better.
- Realize it’s importance.
- Self discipline leads to self control.
- Gain respect through self discipline.
- Decrease your stress level.
1) Make it a habit
Self discipline is again a quality which can be inculcated if you really strive with all your might to make it a part of your personality. Off course, tremendous will power with relentless efforts in that particular direction are essential ingredients. On the road to success, I believe, discipline is a must. If we were to ask the achievers, most of them would have “Self discipline” as a common quality. Barrack Obama recalls in his memoir “Dreams from my father” that during his days in Columbia university he was concentrating on his studies, running three miles a day, fasting on Sundays and no more getting high. He was heading towards a predictable, disciplined life early since college days and undoubtedly this habit not only paved his way to be the President of US but also one of the best ones.
2) The earlier the better
I guess the earlier the better it is. I remember my day started at 5 am, never to miss the sunrise during my childhood and so it is now, latest it will be 6 am. This makes me do a lot more work than my colleagues whose day starts at 9 am or so. My request to parents would be to develop ‘Self discipline’ as a habit as early as possible in their children. Once it is ingrained in their blood and bones, it will stay there forever. It will peep through every task performed, whether big or small and for sure, it will give them an edge over the others.
3) Realize it’s importance
Realizing it’s importance forces you to make ‘Self discipline’ your habit. It is not only the main ingredient for success but also gets your work done fast and in time. Your punctuality because of this habit of yours, your quality of work brings in accolades for you. Even more important than the appreciation by others, the control over your profession and life as a whole, gives you a great sense of satisfaction and the feeling of being in control itself gives a boost to your self esteem and you see yourself excelling in various spheres of life. Really, nothing succeeds like success, the series goes on.
4) Self discipline leads to self control
Self control is a must not only to achieve, but also to lead a healthy and happy life. I feel, falling prey to any of the vices is because of lack of self control. Addiction for example, may it be to alcohol, drugs, internet or smoking, happens to people when they lose their self control. The same alcohol consumed in limits is medicine, while the same alcohol gulped down peg after peg becomes a deadly poison for our body. The line of demarcation needs self control which very much comes through self discipline. Going further with the same example of Barrack Obama, it is said that in one of the interviews his friend quoted that Obama had trained himself with self discipline to such an extent, that he could control his mental state very well. The outburst of anger and other emotions displaying lack of self control, like other celebs was never spoken of him. Self discipline and self control are needed to be mentally healthy. Stabilizing your mind will definitely make you achieve materialistic goals as well as spiritual bliss.
5) Gain respect through self discipline
This habit makes you gain a lot of respect. You cannot force people to respect you, it has to come spontaneously from their side. When self discipline becomes an inseparable part of your personality it comes, because people look upon you as a dependable person who can be relied on in times of crisis. You can gain respect through your work and persona. Self discipline makes you committed to the job and committed to the persons concerned. Self discipline is reflected in every task you do. People will follow you as a leader, not because of fear but because of respect. They will place you at a high pedestal.
6) Decrease your stress level
All in all, discipline comes with a package of advantages. It makes your life orderly, predictable to a certain extent and most importantly in control. Stress level automatically dips down as you can manage your work, time, family and self more efficiently. The feeling that you control your life, itself reduces stress.
During one of my sessions, we were discussing about the river and I asked “What comes to your mind when we talk about the river?” I got varied answers for the same question. Water, stones, weeds, flora, fauna, etc. One person gave a brilliant answer, ‘The banks of the river’. How true, the importance of the banks cannot be underestimated. Presence of the banks give a particular direction to the flow of the river. Had the banks of the river not been there, the water would be scattered. Those banks represent ‘Self discipline’. Just as the water of the river is scattered in the absence of the banks, similarly, our life will be scattered in absence of “Self discipline”. Once, life is scattered within no time you will be shattered and frustrated. It is self discipline which gives a particular direction to our life and fastens the process of reaching our destination.
Hope these tips about “Self discipline” enrich different spheres of your life. Bye for now. See you on Sunday with another ray of sunshine.
