The same old question mamma, said my daughter. I think my answer would be a ‘Doctor’. ‘Thank God’ I gave a sigh of relief. But what surprised me were the answers to the subsequent questions that followed. ‘Why do you want to become a doctor?’ I asked. ‘Is it to serve the people, do some charitable work, earn a lot of money, have a good name in the society or all of these? ‘No mamma …. not any of these. It is because doctors enjoy so much’. I was shocked. These children have not seen our period of struggle, burning the night oil and studying for hours together. Not only during our graduation and post graduation days, but the struggle continues forever. Waiting for every single patient so as to pay off the loans over the sophisticated equipment and the maintenance of the huge white elephant called hospital.
But then, when I gave it a deep thought, I realized, these few years we really enjoyed life. Since the formation of our group fourteen years back, we were really savoring every moment to the fullest. The frequent outings, the memorable trips, the sumptuous dinners where the males thoroughly enjoyed the drinks while we all females found a great pleasure in chatting endlessly. The icing on the cake were the giggles and laughter of our children enjoying their own company to their hearts content. It was almost like life had just begun. One such delightful evening was the 31st of December.
Just a few days after this wonderful evening, like a bolt from the blue, we got the horrifying news and rushed to the hospital to see our friend almost brain dead. After fighting bravely face to face with the major block in his heart , he finally succumbed to death. All of us were engulfed in grief. The more we thought about it, the more puzzling it would become. We had always admired him for his systematic approach towards life. Exercise- he never escaped a single day, food-he was so particular about having salads and only two chappatis. Non alcoholic, non smoker. Stress- he always kept at bay. We always referred to the couple as the most romantic couple. Made for each other as they were, we were amazed by their organization skills and planning and of course always ready to help anybody.
Truly remarkable was his style of living. Smiling and laughing, always on the top of the world. Then, what went wrong? We all began to blame his hereditary factors. Whatever was the reason. The conclusion which could be drawn from all this was that we are just puppets in HIS hands. How true are the lines of the famous film Anand ….. The only consoling thought was, whatever little life he lived, he lived it like a king. He excelled academically, he was the National Vice President of his field of expertise and on top of that he enjoyed every moment thoroughly.
From that day onwards, when I wake up in the morning I say, ‘Thank you God for this wonderful day’ and most important is that I mean it.Not everybody who sleeps at night wakes up to see the next sunrise. I learnt it the hard way.
Life is like a book with several pages. Even if we have scribbled all pages up till now, we can still start writing poetry or draw some beautiful pictures on the rest of the pages. But, we should remember one thing and that is any page can be the last page of the book. Any day can be the last day of our life.
Then, why do we drag our life, the way we do. We start nagging about the less sugar in the tea, the more oil in the food. More patients is a problem and less patients is bigger problem. Less money is a problem and more money is a bigger problem causing sleepless nights with nightmares of income tax raid.
Life can be lived in three ways. i)Happy– which means whatever the circumstances, you remain happy. ii) Comfortable– is the one, where you cannot compromise on comfort. You need a seven star hotel, a luxurious bungalow, a high end car, etc. iii) The third would be a Meaningful – a life lived for others. Though personally, I would go in for the third one, you can choose your own pick. Nothing is right or wrong. But once decided, walk on your desired path. Stay away from the trap of the rat race. Lead your life and live the way you want.
Keep smiling, it is contagious. Laugh out loud, eat to your hearts content, roam like a vagabond, dance like crazy, play till you sweat it out (of course, not forgetting your responsibilities) and above all be happy and radiate happiness.Remember, the most important thing in life is not the treasure of jewelry you posses, not your huge mansion, not your luxurious car, not even your spouse or your children. The most important thing about life is ‘life’ itself. Please live it to the fullest. Javed Akhtar has beautifully quoted in ZNMD.
One day, you will wake up and realize there isn’t any more time left to do the things, you have always wanted. Do it now. Remember there is no second life.
Be excited to be alive.
